The Role Of Pell Grants In Financial Aid
The economic circumstances of a family have a direct bearing on how

Pell Grants

College Grants

a students financial aid application is viewed. The government created these loans and grants to help disadvantaged families catapult their children into a secondary degree program. Pell grants form part of the foundation of this plan, and students should seriously look at the program to see if they qualify.

Since it is dependent on the government, the actual money distributed for a Pell grant varies with what is happening in Washington. For now, these grants hover around the 5,000-dollar area. Each year changes, though, so it is advisable to double check before applying.

Colleges and universities have to qualify before students can use Pell grants to pay tuition there. A large majority of schools do meet the requirements. Still, just to be sure, students should call their financial aid representative to confirm. If you are at a qualifying institution, the funds are sent out two times each year, irrespective of how the school organizes its programs.

Of course, Pell grants are not endless streams of money for school. After 18 semesters, the funding ends, so students should plan accordingly. Also, these grants are earmarked for students who are pursuing a degree, usually a bachelor's or associate's degree. Some people do manage to work in a Pell grant for different degree types, but they have to be enrolled at least as part-time students.

An annual income of 20,000 dollars seems to be the cutoff for most applicants. That said, many families with higher incomes also receive the grants. This is mostly due to other relevant circumstances that affect a family's net worth. For example, even slightly higher-income families can qualify if they have moved income into a family business. It just depends on what is happening at the time of application, so applicants should divulge any relevant details.

Sectors of society that have traditionally had trouble coming up with the money to go to school should also consider applying for these grants. Single mothers, for example, will find that Pell grants offer a particularly attractive form of financing an education. That is the main goal: getting people who would normally be shut out into school.

It is not wise, however, to think of this as a system that will send a check for individuals to take and spend as they want. Most of the time, students never see the money. It goes directly to their place of study. Furthermore, since tuition costs are so high these days, Pell grants are not a one-shot solution. A vast majority of students will find that they need to find additional sources of funding, either public or private, to pay for their education.

In the end, financial aid for secondary education is a complex puzzle that eventually comes together, but only with some work. Pell grants represent a unique opportunity for people who would normally not have access to funds like this. So, while they are not a panacea, students should still look at them as a blessing and a tool in the quest to pay for school.
