Another avenue of obtaining money without repaying for educational pursuits would be through the use of scholarships. Normally, these are only available for a select few who have demonstrated some outstanding achievement in a particular area, such as sports, music or various academics. Grants can often be easier for the average person to obtain and consist of money that is awarded to be used for a variety of educational purposes. They are offered for college, and various technical or vocational training. In most cases, the requirements for such grants are much less stringent than those normally found for a scholarship. Most often, they are based on need rather than special merit and, like scholarships, these are funds that do not have to be paid back.

However, unlike a scholarship, a grant can often be acquired without having to excel tremendously in a particular field or hold some type of special talent. With a reasonably good academic history and a desire to learn, most people find they can qualify for a grant of some kind. Of course, every program will have its own set of specifications. There is a wide variety of these publicly and privately funded awards.

In addition to the various government agencies, there are many assorted businesses, foundations and non-profit organizations that provide monetary assistance for aspiring students. Generally, these are not as well known as the government programs, but they are certainly worth investigating. Naturally, each of these will have their own set of qualifications that are required for application and approval. A grant is generally awarded only after a student's background is evaluated for various criteria. It is most common for grants to be given out to needy students who experience some relative financial hardship. In fact, having excessive monetary resources is a major cause of grant denial.

Financial condition is often the main consideration, but other particulars such as place of residence, areas of interest and past academic record can come into play. Different institutions may also change requirements periodically, so it pays to have up to date information when researching.

While it is possible for most people to qualify for some type of a grant, there will be ways to increase the chances of being approved. For those people who are currently in school, it may be a good idea to maintain the best grades achievable, as this could be a factor when apply to some programs. It is also wise to carefully investigate the criteria surrounding each program to avoid wasting time applying grants without having the right qualifications in place.

Following all the steps as they are outlined can make the difference between getting the requested funding and going home empty handed. As soon as the decision is made to attend a school, the application process for a grant should be started.
