economy. This is the reason why the federal government lays so much stress on the improvement of the small businesses. With an aim to help boost the small businesses the federal government provides a host of grants in terms of free money to these small companies. Of the total business grants of $34 billion in 2009, more than $ 100 million was allocated for helping the small business sector. These grants are meant for the small companies and ventures to utilize for acquiring more efficient technology and skilled manpower that will improve efficiency and overall productivity. In order to finance these acquisitions most of the small business look for loans or even spend their savings which is not the best option. The loans come at high interest rate and depleting savings is in any case not advisable for obvious reasons. It is at this juncture that the small business grants of the federal government are of help. These grants are absolutely free and do not have to be repaid. Their objective is to help the small ventures improve productivity. The business does not have to be non profit based in order to be eligible for free grants as is the popular belief.
The objective of the federal government in making available such free funds is to help start new ventures or expand and streamline the existing ones. Small business like shops, service providers etc are all eligible to apply for these grants. These small business grants are there for the individual business owner to decide how to spend in the best interest of the company by either getting better machinery and infrastructure or employing more skilled and efficient workers to expand and improve the business.
Factors in getting Small Business Grants
Exporting units: Business that are engaged in export operations are more likely to get these benefits as they are engaged in an activity that helps the economy and reduces the trade deficit for the nation.
Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Disability: Since the government considers these categories of people as being under privileged they are accorded due priority in the grant of free government money. Any business that is run by or that employs people of these categories gets clear advantage in receiving these grants.
Location: Any business that is located in the rural and backward areas contribute to the general development there by creating new jobs for the locals which is also what the government desires, so they are given preference in grant of financial help.
Farming & Agriculture: Due to the large risk element in industries like the farming, agriculture and animal husbandry the government tries to be of more help to these sectors. Businesses in these sectors are therefore almost assured of a grant from the government in terms of free money.
Since these grants are there to help the small businesses they should be applied for. The most important factors that determine the chances of approval are the business plan presentation and the correct and accurate documentation of the application as per guidelines of the approving agency.
