though discretionary funds saving yourself time by staying away from any discussion carried around the subject of paying a percentage of the grant. AAGP - American Association of Grant Professionals - requires its members to decline the commissions or percentage compensation. You should avoid those who affirm they will write a grant in exchange of a commission. The discretionary fund that is preferred for paying the grant writers consists of money that one can use for whatever purpose that is chosen in order to comply with the agency's mission. The source that is commonly filling up the discretionary funds is Individual Donors.
Opposite to these funds, grants have 'strings attached' as the saying goes. These grants will limit the ways in which the money should be spent. As long as you can use the grant to pay the grant writer, it is better to create the discretionary fund to pay for helping with the fundraising, grant writing and grant leads. How can you create this fund? Here are 4 ways to show you how to build the discretionary fund:
1. Organize an annual fundraising event, something like a golf tournament, dinner, concert, or just find another event that suits your mission. Exploit the possibility that tap the board's expertise allowing your board to step behind.
2. Create a Founder's Circle. This is the best for startups, as you can find people who love being the first ones who are involved in a project. The campaign can be run by you or by a board member. For instance you can startup with a donation of $500 for a new nonprofit that will challenge others to join you into being a piece in the Founder's Circle. You can also ask the members to be constant payers for 5 years and in this way you can generate a large sum of money in a relatively short period of time.
3. Find sponsorship. Ask one of the local corporations to assist into sponsoring the cost of a fundraiser or grant writer into a nonprofit purpose. Then you should recognize them as your sponsors inside the annual report and newsletter.
4. Find a small group of individual sponsors asking each one of them to come with a certain amount - $1,000 maybe - to help sponsoring grant writer or fundraiser into your nonprofit. You can give these individuals a special designation such as 'Platinum Sponsor". After you have built this discretionary fund you will be in the great position of leveraging these funds for grant writing, fundraising, and grant writing.
