the graduate students. Compared to student loans, these grants come as free money although one has to prove that they were used in accordance to the specified purpose. There are two of the most commonly overlooked financial aids: the travel grants and research grants. The latter are used for those students preoccupied with the scientific researches, but also in other areas as well. As to the travel grant, this one has to be seen as the travel needs related to the research field as well as those that are awarded to students going to professional conferences.
Undergraduate research has become meanwhile more common providing an important edge on the competitive level in the need to apply to graduate school. Researches are not necessary conducted merely in science field, as there can be others (history, literature, social science) which call for financial aid for the undergraduates conducting these kind of researches. Well, research is an expensive field as it might include lab processing fees, materials, fees for reprints, traveling, journal submission fees and many others. This undergraduates research is considered small in its scope, therefore small amounts could suffice before you initiate a larger project to be funded.
Research grants are most of the times provided by professional societies, nonprofits institutions, hobby groups and many other agencies and organizations. There are also various universities to offer undergraduate projects money and along with all these sources you can attach other more that the academic advisor can update you with. The student travel grants are generally offered to those who need to travel in the purpose of attending the professional conferences. Even if you do not necessary have to travel for your research project, you should know that grantors prefer first of all to offer these grants to these students and after that taking your purpose of traveling into consideration.
In either case, you should learn that these government grants are better to apply to as early as possible since the travel grants are given most of the times on a rolling basis. When applying, you must attach your resume as well as letters of references, and the grant proposal. These proposals are designed in various formats depending mostly on the discipline, including also a succinct presentation of the previous related work, what do students intend to use the grant for, the implications that the project brings, a bibliography and a detailed budget sheet.
