for education from the government or the state which comes without any tags at all and do not need to be repaid. This is a means obtaining a degree free of cost. The discussion on high price of college education often puts one in doubt whether the expenditure is worth the price. A college degree is a sure way of getting better and high paying jobs as it enhances your skill levels and therefore your employability. The question of funding that college education is critical. The choice is between taking a loan and trying to avail a government grant.
Whatever be your personal situation one thing is for sure that the education acquired at college is definitely a stepping stone to higher achievements. The time spent in the college is not a waste and apart from giving you a qualification, it also improves the basic knowledge and understanding of the world to make you a better and more responsible citizen. The money spent on college education is certainly worth it.
As far as getting that money for college is concerned it is grant that is always better than a loan. Firstly because the grants need not be paid back and secondly because the money for the grant comes from the tax payers, who give it to the government to improve their lot. The government on its part spends this on helping people to acquire higher education and thereby become better citizens who will then help build a better society.
With a little bit of searching around one can easily locate a grant which will form the mainstay of the expenditure at college. A good way to start is to search online for the kind of grant that you require. The sites will inform you about the types of grants, the eligibility criteria and the amount of grant admissible to you. They also provide guidance in filling up the forms. The best thing about applying for grant is that there is absolutely nothing to loose. In case your application is not accepted the first time, learn from the mistakes made and make another attempt.
Pell Grants: This is by far the most important of all grants. It gives $5550 for one year of studies and is absolutely free from repayment burdens. This is your chance to get through college education. This is the foremost of all financial aids available and when applying for FAFSA this grant is considered prior to all others which may be added on later. Mostly this grant is for undergraduate studies but in some cases even baccalaureate students can take benefit from it, the aim being to encourage education beyond the secondary level. There are more than 5400 institutions that come under the scheme of this grant.
TEACH Grants: This is a wonderful package for people who want to continue higher education while teaching whether in public or private institutions and elementary or secondary levels as long as the school is targeting poor children. This is certainly a boon for aspiring teachers who can avail up to $ 4000 per academic year.
Academic Competitiveness Grants (ACG): This particular grant was instituted in 2005 by the Higher Education Reconciliation Act to help out meritorious students who have qualified for the Pell grants with an additional grant of $1300 for the year.
National SMART Grants: The national Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent award is for 3rd and 4th year undergraduate students with major in physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering & technology, any foreign language or non major single liberal art studies and amounts to about $ 4000 in a year.
The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunities Grant: This grant is aimed at the extremely poor students who have qualified for the Pell grant and does not require being paid back amounting to $ 4000 per year.
Over and above the grants mentioned here there are a number of aids available from the states, schools, religious organizations, NGO, private institutions etc, the detailed list of which will be available with the grant advisor of the school. Additionally there may be many grants by the state you stay in, the information regarding which can be sought from the state education department which is in charge of state level financial grants for education. There is also a State Grant Agency whose sole responsibility is to look after grant disbursements and can tell about the various financial help and scholarships available. Federally supported state programs like the Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (LEAP) and the Byrd scholarships also fall in this category.
In case nothing works out it would be worth while to try with private organizations which also have huge amount of money set aside for social responsibility activities that include promoting education.
