the federal and state governments through the schools and various other organization that make the best deal for students looking for free college education. College grants are the most widely utilized of all government grants as means for American students to finance their higher education. This money is granted on basis of the need of the student, the eligibility of the program and the availability of the funds without any repayment strings attached to it. These funds are there to be utilized for payment of college related expenses including college and tuition fees. The funds are distributed on a first come first serve basis to all applicants. In the last academic year alone the amount of money distributed through these programs was to the tune of $ 26265147289 for all those students looking to avail free education. Ranging from an average 0f $2278 per student the maximum sum availed reached up to $ 5350 per student for the year. There is no dearth of money available to you for paying college dues. All that is needed of you is to apply. These grants are there for all kinds of students in various different categories. The most common of the funds are the Pell Grants, TEACH Grants, National SMART awards, Academic Competitiveness Grants (ACG) and the Federal Supplementary Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG).
Pell Grants: This forms the major portion of all the monetary aid given by the government and is largest in terms of the corpus. Named after the senator from Rhodes Island, Claiborne Pell who proposed the grant, this is the ideal means of getting free money to fund education. The objective of the grant is to promote post secondary studies amongst the poorer students. The eligibility and requirement is ascertained by the US Department of Education employing a standard calculation that has been approved by the US Congress. This is the first aid that you can avail while applying for FAFSA and it makes you eligible for many other grants to be added on to it.
TEACH Grants: All students aspiring to become teachers and ready to teach in rural areas and to poorer children become eligible for this grant. The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education is a program that gives away free aid to these students who have undertake that they will become teachers upon graduating. In case the students do not take up teaching then the grant gets converted into a loan that needs to be paid back as any other student loan. Thus career goals should be clear prior to applying for this grant.
National SMART Grants: Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent is a national program to encourage science and math among the 3rd and 4th year students in under graduate courses. This free money is to support the students with majors in science, computers, math, engineering & technology and foreign languages but can also be availed by students with non majors in single liberal arts programs. The SMART grants are given over and above other grants and the student must have availed the Pell grant to be eligible to apply. The amount given is $ 4000 per year to only 3rd and 4th year students having GPA score of minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Academic Competitiveness Grant: This is established by the Higher Education Reconciliation Act as a supplement to already given Pell grant and also in conjunction with the SMART grant. This grant is available to 1st year and 2nd year students who are in the more difficult major courses. The maximum amount in the ACG is $ 4000 and the average that any one student gets is about $787. The eligibility depends on better performance in the secondary school programs.
Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants: This is a federally supported program for the extremely poor students wanting to take admission in colleges. The money does not have to be repaid till such time the eligibility conditions persist and is given on the criteria of need of the student and is disbursed on a first come first serve basis. The most financially weak students who have been granted the Pell grants are the priority in award of the FSEOG.
This simply means that there are enough grants available for anyone desirous to take advantage to pursue higher education in the colleges.
