government and this is the reason why it has undertaken to institute literacy grants and allocated billions of dollars to help more people to gain access to education. In the research conducted by the National Assessment of Adult Literacy almost half the adult population in the US have very poor or marginal in literacy skills. This deficiency adversely affects their chances of getting better employment opportunities. A large number of Hispanics in the US, accounting for over eleven million adults are non literate in English which implies that their chances of better job avenues will remain restricted which is a very worrying trend. It is this problem that the government hopes to address by spending huge sums of money as literacy grants.
Even Start
This is a federal government literacy initiative by the US Department of Education that aims to offer financial aids to both the students as well as their families from poor back grounds. The scheme funds early childhood education, adolescent education, adult education and even studies for English as a Secondary Language (ESL). There are many family literacy missions which benefit from the Even Start grants. There are special reservations for migrants and Native Americans in these grants. The grant money is also available to cover transportation costs and day care expenses.
Discretionary Research
This scheme is also funded by the US Department of Education to assist research into advanced techniques of education. The Office of Educational Research and Improvement administers these grants to those studies that can evaluate the effectiveness of various government funded literacy drives and missions. Assistive studies in disabled literacy, group education plans and early childhood literacy programs are encouraged by these grants.
National Institute for Literacy
This is nodal agency funded jointly by the US Departments of Education, labor, Health and Human Services that has more than 7400 resources from where it derives the information regarding the implementation and effectiveness of all the government sponsored literacy initiatives. This information can be accessed by the teachers, research students, parents and any education enthusiasts. The information available at this agency gives a fair idea about the methods of instructions, program modules and type of funding that have gone into any literacy drive.
The grants for literacy is the means by which the federal government is ensuring that there more literate people in the country who can have hopes of a better future. All those people who have not had a chance at getting formal education must take advantage of these grants that are being offered by the government. In order to get grant all you need to do is to find one and apply for it in the desired format. There are even family literacy programs where in the parents can benefit along with the children in getting financial aids to acquire basic education. However there is very little awareness among the masses about the existence of such literacy grants that can be easily availed to their benefit.
