for influencing the society towards a positive change. White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives was a project initiated by the outgoing Bush administration which aimed at making the churches more relevant and have faith based institutions playing a bigger role in the development of the nation through social initiatives that will benefit a larger section of the population. With this objective in mind the federal government gives out billions of dollars every year to churches and other religious and faith based organizations to undertake activities that will help the community as a whole to improve.

The grants for churches that are being offered cannot be used by the church or the religious and faith based organizations to cater to their day to day expenditures like paying the electricity bills, paying wages of the employed staff or maintenance of the church building. These grants have to be used for specific purposes for which they have been applied. The possible causes that are eligible for the award of these grants are initiatives to reduce juvenile crime and violence, awareness against AIDS and drug abuse, shelter for the homeless, home based employment for the disables and the elderly or even legitimate recreational facilities for the youth. All these activities will ultimately benefit the population and make the community a better place to live and grow in. The church applying for the grant must categorically define the social relevance of the purpose for which the grant is being sought and also specify the means by which the church intends to address the issue and bring about the solution to the problem. What must be borne in mind while trying to obtain a grant for the church is that while the government considers the church or any faith based organization an important part of the social set up it is not willing to spend money on causes that do not have sufficient social justification.

In order to apply for the grants for churches adequate research needs to be under taken so that the exact grant which caters to the particular mission objective can be selected. Internet will have abundant sources of information about all such grants that are being offered. Before applying a few documents must be kept ready which include the proof of 501(c) (3) status from the Internal Revenue Service and proof of being a non profit organization. In case the church doesn’t have this then the nearest IRS office can be approached to seek help in getting the necessary documentation. After having got al the documents in place no time should be wasted in applying as the grants are limited and are given on a first come first serve basis so early applications have a better chance of approval.

The churches and other religious and faith based institutions have the power to bring about social transformation and usher in accelerated development of the community if these grants for churches are utilized properly and the needy aspects are addressed correctly. All churches must take the benefits of free government aids that are being given through the grants for churches.
