utilized to enhance the role of churches and faith based organizations to improve the society. During the last phase of the Bush administration an initiative was taken to help out churches by establishing a mechanism for providing monetary aids through the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. This was a new chapter in government aids wherein the churches were the nodal agency in bringing about social changes in the nation. The awareness among the churches about the availability of such huge amounts of funds for their well being is poor and as a result many churches never apply for the financial help that is meant for them. Other churches also do not apply for the fear of the conditionality that they think that the government will impose on their functioning after accepting the grants. However that is not the case and these granted do not have any restrictions imposed on being granted to a religious or community based organization.

Purposes for which Church Grants are given

There are a few misconceptions regarding the purposes for which church grants can be applied for. The only criterion that is placed in the application procedure is that the grant has be specifically oriented for a socially beneficial purpose and it cannot be utilized for day to day running of the church. That means the churches cannot apply for grants to pay electricity bills or wages of people employed with them on a permanent basis. These grants can be applied for special initiative that a church plans to help out people like creating a drive to reach out to the high risk children, counseling of juvenile criminals, anti drug abuse awareness drive, helping out single mothers to continue education or even educating people against domestic violence. The aim is that ultimately the church should spend the money that will directly have an impact on the betterment of the society.

Applying for Church Grants

Well there are many faith based grants that are available from the federal government which include the Compassion Capital Fund, Mentoring Children of Prisoners, Access to Recovery and the Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative. These are over and above the standard grants for churches that are offered. Despite there being a large sum of money allocated for the church grants the chances of getting one is not very high simply due to lack of awareness and the procedure involved. Most of the grants are on a first come first serve basis and therefore application needs to be submitted as early as possible after having decided on the type of grant that a church wants to apply for. The application needs to be readied with care as it requires many documents that will have to be submitted along with. The application filling may need a little bit of professional assistance to make the bid stand out among other application for the grants.

Church grants are a great way to use government money for the improvement of the society and hence all churches should take advantage and apply for church grants.
