with physical, sensory or intellectual disability or mental health difficulty to suitably modify their houses for comfortable living. More than 15 million dollars have been earmarked in the current fiscal towards this activity and it is part of the government social responsibility towards its citizens who are disadvantaged. These schemes are available in more than 21 states all over the US. The major federal government housing grant that caters to this particular requirement is called the Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability. Additionally there is the Mobility Aids Grant Scheme which can be applied for in case the house requires only minor works to enable safe and comfortable living for the disabled persons.

Major repair and adaptation works that cater for wheel chair movements and require extension of the rooms, ground floor bathrooms or stair lifts can be availed from the Housing adaptation grants of the HUD which was created in 2007 replacing the Disabled Persons Grants. Under this scheme the grants will be given to people who are in owner occupied accommodation, living in houses purchased under the tenant purchase scheme from a local authority, private rented accommodation (The period of rent will be a factor), houses availed under the voluntary housing Capital Assistance and Rental Subsidy schemes and houses that are occupied by persons living in communal residences. In the allotment of the grant money the first priority is given to persons who are terminally ill and fully dependant on others for all their activities and for whom these adaptation changes are mandatory to facilitate discharge from special health acre centre. The next in the priority list are those persons who are mobile but need assistance in activities like washing or going to the bathroom and bedroom where the adaptation works will make them more or less independent. The last priority in these housing grants for disabled people is given to those who are independent in most activities but the adaptation works will improve their quality of like in terms of providing separate bedrooms or bathrooms.

The process of application for these housing grants for adaptation works is through the Department of Housing and Urban Development which will on receipt of the application resort to the opinion of a Occupational Therapist in assessing the actual nature of works that are necessary and after that will decide the need of the applicant by scrutinizing the income proof and the statement of assets of the individual.. on an average if the household income of the applicant is less than $ 30000 annually then he is likely to be given up to 95 % of the cost of all the adaptation works involved. However the grant amount will be reduced in case the house is less than one year old.

These housing grants for the disabled people to adapt their homes as per their peculiar requirements are a great step in alleviating the pains and discomforts of the disabled people. All those needy people who are in the above discussed categories must apply and take benefit of the money being offered by the government.
